Requirements and recommendations for traders

Last update 12.05.2020

Obligatory requirements for traders:

  • The flow of visitors must be organised in such a way that there is no more than 1 visitor per 4 m2 at the same time at the location of sale;
  • Traders must implement physical distancing measures at the entrance of the location of sale, ensuring a distance of 2 metres between clients;
  • In addition, we encourage traders to ensure, where possible, that the clients have the possibility to observe a distance of 2 meters also in the areas adjacent to the location of sale, for example, in parking lots;
  • Traders, incl. shopping centres, markets, and street sales venues, must display in visible places (at least at the cash register or at the entrance of the territory of the location of sale) a clearly legible indication to visitors to be socially responsible and to observe a distance of 2 meters from the visitor in front of them in the checkout area;
  • Traders with a shop floor larger than 100 m2 must provide restricting signs in the checkout area, ensuring a distance of 2 meters between the customers in the queue;
  • In shopping centres, a notice in Latvian must be played regularly (once every 15 minutes), urging clients not to stay in the sales premises unnecessarily and to follow the instructions on observing physical distancing. The trader may choose to play the notice in other foreign languages;
  • Wherever possible, other measures must be taken in order to limit the flow of people at locations of sale.

To support traders in meeting the new requirements, the Ministry of Economics has prepared and is distributing a free audio file of the notification.
