The Republic of Latvia declares a state of emergency in its territory from 9 November until 6 December

Safe behaviour in the work environment

Last update 13.11.2020

For the duration of the state of emergency, we urge employers and employees to follow the principles of safe work to prevent the spread of Covid-19 at the workplace whenever possible.

What should an employer do?
  • If your working conditions allow this, and the employee can fully perform their duties from home, provide remote work options.
  • Provide employees working in-person with personal protective equipment necessary for performing their duties (e.g. masks covering the mouth and nose, aprons, protective suits)
  • Promote collective responsibility: do not allow ill employees to be at the workplace
  • If an employee reports feeling ill, let them spend at least one day at home, to monitor their health
  • Encourage employees to regularly ventilate the premises, and provide a way to sanitise hands
  • Regularly clean any surfaces that come in contact with many people (door handles, buttons in lifts, coffee machines, water taps etc.)
  • Provide your employees with an option to work remotely
  • Reduce the number of employees working in-person or inside one room
  • Ensure a distance of at least 2 metres between employees
  • If maintaining this distance is impossible, set up additional protective barriers between the employees
  • Arrange gatherings and meetings to take place remotely
  • Do not arrange business trips abroad. If some has returned from a business trip abroad, check to confirm if they must self-isolate for 10 days
  • Restrict employees gathering in shared spaces such as the kitchen, cloakroom, recreation areas etc. Do not arrange recreational events indoors
What should an employee do?
  • Can you perform your everyday work remotely? Discuss this option with your employer
  • If you are ill, stay home. Do not go to work expecting to feel better during the day
  • Don’t feel too well? Arrange to temporarily work from home with your employer, in order to monitor your health
  • Do not gather in shared spaces at work, such as the kitchen, cloakroom, recreation areas etc.
  • Wash or sanitise your hands regularly
  • Ventilate the rooms regularly
  • If you sneeze or cough, use a napkin, or sneeze or cough in the pit of your elbow
  • If possible, participate in gatherings and meetings remotely
  • If you have been epidemiologically determined to have been in contact with a person who contracted COVID-19, observe quarantine at home. Going to work in person is prohibited.
